The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is a measure of the average net present cost of electricity generation for a generator over its lifetime. It is used for investment planning and to compare different methods of electricity generation on a consistent basis. According to the American Council on Renewable Energy, the levelized cost of wind energy has declined by 70 percent over the past decade. The levelized cost of solar power has decreased by 90 percent.

In its 2023 Annual Energy Outlook, the EIA projects renewable generating capacity to grow in all regions of the US under all scenarios, supported by an increase in installed battery capacity.
